A sublime chawan (tea bowl), reminiscent of classic marble sculptures, though warmer and more inviting to the touch. This vessel has the noble air of an ancient work of art and the modern feel of a ware shaped by a contemporary designer. It was made by a potter, who has exposed in a multitude of venues and lands, from Tokyo to New York and Beijing, as an ambassador of Hagi pottery; a tradition with roots in the world of the tea ceremony and which has therefore a sense of the Now, that is etern... I've had the privilege to hold quite a few Ueda Tsuneji (1914-1987) chawan here in our gallery, and each one is a wonder. Please see our archives for photos of those and more about Ueda, a very great Kyoto Mingei potter. This chawan is quite appropriately open-faced for summer with a wider neriage(marbled) and bokuryu(flowing ink) facade than on any other Ueda chawan we handled over the years. A light transparent glaze has pooled somewhat to make a light-greenish-blue jewel-esque crackled patc... Click for details

Kimura Yoshiro(b.1946) is really quite an amazing ceramic artist in his pure vision of blue vessels. The blue tones change from sky blue near the lip to an opaque blue-purple in the pool. A very summery work in perfect condition with a signed box, 16.1cm.tallx32.2x20.7, stamped on base. Fired a few times in Yoshisuji Keiji's small anagama these two natural ash-glazed(shizen-yu) apples are fine desk objects to refresh the senses, just as a crisp apple does on an autumn day. The left one was fired twice and the right thrice, thus the different levels of ash. Both in perfect condition with signed boxes, 10.5cm.tallx8-9cm.
