This remarkable tokkuri (sake bottle), with its spectacular soft caramel glaze and rich contrasted tones, is the work of Suzuki Tomio, who is, in my opinion, one of the best Shino potters in Japan. In spite of the difficulty of making Shino ware, which has a very high loss rate, he has proven to be one of its masters. Born in Kyoto in 1948, Suzuki Tomio established his first kiln in the southern suburbs of Kyoto, in the Yawata district, in 1988 and since 1989 specializes only in Shino-yaki. H... Click for details

A fantastic and huge Han-zutsu Shino Chawan by one of that genres greatest 20th century names Kato Kageaki (1899-1972), wrapped in a Shifuku silk bag and enclosed in the original signed and stamped wooden box. It is a proud, heavily potted bowl with great stature. Dashes of red cut through the thick white Shino glaze of the front, while the rim is burnt amber with rust. Inside white drips of feldspathic glaze studded with su-ana pinholes, which will, eventually with use, fill with color, an e... Click for details

A fine lac burgaute box in the shape of a lantern. I think this is Japanese rather than Chinese but do not have the expertise in this particular field to be certain. The black lacquer is inlaid with pieces of mother of pearl and silver wire.Again, I have trouble with dating this item. I am guessing at early C20th. There is a paper label to the base which may help.... Click for details

Koyama Fujio(1900-1975) was an influential scholar and seasoned potter who helped shape the Japanese ceramic landscape for the 20th century--and it's understanding before then. A recent issue of HONOHO GEIJUTSU was devoted to him. This rare
guinomi is a Chinese style black glazed with white rim yuteki tenmoku based on Chinese Cizhou wares of the Jin Dynasty, 12th-13th century. It has a signed box, 3.5cm.tallx8.5, a few teeny-tiny nicks--hardly noticeable on kodai rim; a fine work by a potter wh... Click for details

I was lucky to have met Matsuda KazanIV(1936-2003)many times, the first time at a Tokyo exhibition in the late 80s. He was a true, humble Bizen potter--designated an Okayama Prefectural Cultural Property in 2002--who made solid traditional works for Tea, flowers, the table and sake. One of his tokkuri forms that recalls a form made by Kaneshige Toyo is a henko jar form seen here. It's an oval squat form that is like a yokozuna, and then there's the magnificent color not often seen on any works; ... Click for details

The apparent simplicity of this chawan (tea bowl) does not hide the fact it is a beautiful and sophisticated piece. The more one looks at it and becomes familiar with it, the more is revealed, and the subtle details have much to show. The delicate harmony between the front of the bowl (shomen; see picture 1) and its back evokes the balance that is found on a tree bark; trees are a source of inspiration for Yamaguchi Takeshi. The same tones are also found on the moss covered stones that pave t... Click for details
