Painted in the early 19th century by Suk Chun, this work symbolizes the venerated Korean theme of long life. The ancient pine tree is an emblem of longevity, and the old sage, with his prominent high brow and hairless crown, bears a strong resemblance to Canopus, the star god of longevity. This is a quiet painting, dominated by the wonderful pine that is made more compelling because we see only a part of it. The face of the scholar is all about dignity and discipline with just a hint of humor. D... Click for details

This delicately executed mountain landscape is signed and sealed by the Yi Dynasty Korean painter Lim Sam. Ink and slight color on silk, it dates to mid 19th century and depicts a warm country scene in front of a soaring forested mountain. A snug house with soft light in the windows suggests early evening and is apparently the destination of a lone figure on the back of a water buffalo crossing a small bridge. Fine ink lines and muted color produce a restful effect. A tone on tone silk mat and p... Click for details

Two large, lush lotus leaves in soft shades of green dominate this early 20th century Korean painting. Though generally referred to as folk art, Korean works such as this fall into a category unique to Korea known as "functional" or "popular" art. Unlike true folk art, Korean functional paintings were usually the work of professional artists; it was subject matter and widespread use of the paintings by all classes of society that made them similar to folk art. The paintings were "functional" in ... Click for details

Beautifully ornamented, this bronze Korean temple bell matches its look with a sound that is exceptionally clear and long-lasting. The design echoes that of the huge bells of Korea's Shilla Kingdom. A dragon holds the chain at the top of the bell, and flame shapes with Bodhisattva decorate the perimeter. The bell and striker are suspended on a sturdy wood frame. It is in perfect condition. Dimensions: height of bell 13" (33 cm), bell diameter 8" (20 cm).
