The dragon of the clouds is portrayed in this 150-year-old painting that is from a uniquely Korean genre called "functional painting." Although often called folk art, such Korean works differed from folk art as the term is used elsewhere because in Korea they usually were executed by trained, professional artists or by painter-monks rather than by amateurs. The paintings had useful and magical functions such as warding off evil or ensuring happiness and longevity and were necessary to life in al... Click for details

A monkey sitting on a tree branch gazes soulfully at a full moon in this painting from late Yi Dynasty Korea that evokes an old folk tale. Paintings of particular animals related to beliefs rooted in Shamanism, Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism were popular with all classes in Korea during the 18th and 19th centuries. Although sometimes put into the category of folk art, they more often than not were done by professional artists. In Korea, paintings that had content classifying them as "popular ... Another great folk tiger - this one an eighteenth century wooden folk carving from Korea. The piece measures 10 1/2" high and is 9" wide. Very dynamic pose with the tiger looking up and back - very much the same pose as is frequently found in traditional Korean scrolls wherein the tiger is looking up at the scolding magpie located in a tree. An example of such a painting is included in photo # 8 below - taken from
a website on Korean folk art - http://www.san-shin.org/Zo-05.html. The tiger ... Click for details

Signed and sealed by Chong Mon, a Korean artist whose work dates from mid to late 19th century, this painting is graceful and simple, a fine example of Korean technique using ink and color on paper in the classic Asian style. The subjects are tiger lilies, a rock and two butterflies. The artist added a poem in calligraphy that is very much in tune with the subject matter. The painting retains strong color and is good condition overall, with a few small stains indicating that originally it may ha... Click for details

This mid-19th century pictorial ideograph painting, called a "munjado," has an interesting cultural tie to Korea and its strong Confucian ideals. Ink and slight color on paper, it is unsigned as is typical for munjado. The ideograph is a graphic, stylized interpretation of the Chinese character "shin" meaning "trust," which is one of the eight major Confucian principles of morality. Throughout the Yi Dynasty inscriptions on paintings were in Chinese characters rather than Korean Hangul to signif... Click for details
