Wonderful Paul Jacoulet woodblock, titled Bergers de Hautes Montagnes. Coree (Shepherds of the High
Mountains, Korean), 297/350, published April 20, 1941. It is pencil
signed and bears the Sparrow seal. This design is illustrated at plate 4 of

Korean apothecary chest with 28 drawers, each carved with two ideographs to indicate a particular herbal remedy. Two doors at the bottom open to reveal an open storage area lined with Korean paper. Decorated with brass hardware. Dates circa 1880 - 1920. 28 3/4"L (top), 23"L (chest itself) x 32 3/4"H x 9 3/4"D. Korean paper applied to the back. 11.25" high, base 7" long. Two ceramic light dishes remain. Rusting and a very small crack (see picture). Probably late Edo era, c. 1800-1860. These light stands called "Tomyodai" were used at Buddhist temples in Japan for making votive offerings. Oil and small wicks were placed in the ceramic dishes. The tear shaped design probably alludes to the Buddhist halo. See Moes & Stinchecum's 1995 catalog of Mingei, p. 186 for a related example. Rare and beautiful example of Buddhist Art.
