Michiaki Kaneshige(1934-1995) was the first son of the legendary Toyo and assisted his father for many years, including visits by Rosanjin, Noguchi and many, many of Japan's most famous potters of the 20th century that went to the Kaneshige kiln to create works. Michiaki was a fine potter in his own right having won the Japan Ceramic Society Award in 1979 and also being designated an Okayama Prefectural Intangible Property in 1990, as well as having an illustrious exhibition career. Ito Keiji(b.1935) works in the hills outside Toki city, not far from the legendary kilns of the Momoyama period. He straddles a world of craftsman works combined with his purely artistic essays in clay. Yesterday we offered the former and here is a famous example of the latter; it appears on page 11 of Ito's 'The best selections of contemporary ceramics in Japan' vol.27 from the 100 volume set published in 1992. The work was fired in Ito's anagama and shows a covering of natural ash-glaze as wel... Click for details

Yamamoto Izuru(b.1944)is the fourth son of the late Bizen Living National Treasure Yamamoto Toshu. Izuru's known for his interesting forms and studies on clay and the combining of different clays to bring out different colors on pieces, this is called shusai. Yet, he also fires--not that often though--traditional Yamamoto style pots and here is an excellent example of that. The form is similar to that of his father---full bunrin-apple form--and the firing is a rich varied colored yohen with a ma... Click for details

Enigmatic figures rise from concave discs on the front of this massive Tenmoku Vase by modern sculptural artist Ohi Toshiro enclosed in the original signed wooden box. The gourd shaped form is covered in a mottled red Kaki-yu spotted with flashes of black. The smooth evenly graduated sides contrast with the sharp rough edge of the opening, both surprising and pleasing. Signed clearly on the base, the vase is 14 inches (36 cm) tall, 9-1/2 inches (24 cm) diameter and in perfect condition. Tosh... Click for details

Ajiki Hiro's chawan are a world onto themselves; or as Raku himself sometimes say a cosmos. Ajiki is well-known for his Basara salt-glazed checkered chawan and even the MET in NYC acquired one a few years ago. Each one is unique and we have two recently fired ones to offer. The first one is rounder and fuller with some ash glaze in the pool that most likely dripped from the kiln ceiling, a very fortuitous signal from the kiln gods! In perfect condition with a signed box, 10cm.tallx11.5; more abo... Click for details
