Bizen's first Living National Treasure Kaneshige Toyo (1896-1967) is one of the most important Bizen potters of all time. Along with other first LNT's, such as Arakawa Toyozo and Nakazato Muan, Kaneshige researched and revived the ancient Momoyama Period ways of clay preparation, kiln building, kiln loading--a key aspect--and firing. The "tsuchi-aji" clay flavor of Toyo is unsurpassed on all his works, and it is he who made both the Kaneshige name, and moreover, Bizen, an integral presence in Ja... Click for details

We have been long searching after a larger vessel by Morihiro, and at last we have found one to offer. This is a peculiarly shaped vessel decorated with swirling designs in a fractured circle layed over impressed clay and enclosed in the original signed wooden box. The form is quite unique, the split circle motif actually falling from the center around the mouth to form the opposite side. Not apparent when viewing from the side but easily distinguished from above. It is signed on the base an... Click for details

He's been featured on the covers of many ceramic magazines(Ceramic Art and Perception #32, Ceramics Monthly Summer'97, among others) as well as having a recent documentary made about his life. What is unique about Kanzaki is his firings and the results he gets from a long firing of his anagama; his Buddhist nature also plays a deep part in his works. This Iga eared vase was fir... Michiaki Kaneshige(1934-1995)was the first son of the first Living National Treasure for Bizen, Kaneshige Toyo(1896-1967). Michiaki was a great potter in his own right and had an illustrious career; more about him on our archives. This is a quietly confident sangiri--a Bizen firing technique where charcoal is introduced into the firing creating blue-gray-reddish 'Mars-Jupiter' flashing--tokkuri; it has fine balance and weight even though it appears quite light. A very fine tokkuri in perfect con... Click for details
