This splendid wan (bowl) is the work of Suzuki Goro, a potter recognized throughout the world for his mastery of his craft and his prolific and playful creativity. Women, as a source of inspiration, have a privileged status in Suzuki Goro’s world. The potter often uses nudes as motifs or let the clay be expressed through their forms. A bowl is a very appropriate support for an expression of this adoration, for its shape is after all a symbolic echo of the feminine figure. The Yashichida Orib... Click for details

Hamanaka Gesson has always been an innovative Hagi potter; of course he makes very traditional Hagi wares, yet he also makes hybrid styles blending various glazes and clays. This is not altogether new in the Japanese ceramic world, dating back centuries potters made hybrid styles such as Mino-Iga. This yakishime-high-fired unglazed stoneware sake flask has a very Shigaraki look--some may even say Iga--yet the small pebbles in the clay are from a blend of Hagi clay with Shigaraki--fired in Hamana... A unique modern celadon by seiji master Suwa Sozan III (1932-2005) enclosed in the original signed wooden box. This vase is a break from the more traditional works often associated with this artist in the west, and shows very well the more contemporary side for which he is known domestically. It is a bottle form with all edges raised petal like, calling to mind the lotus bases of Buddhist imagery. The vase is 9-3/4 inches (25 cm) tall, 5 inches (12.5 cm) diameter and in excellent condition. ... Click for details

This vase is a break from the more traditional works often associated with this artist in the west, and shows very well the more contemporary side for which he is known domestically. Three paddle marks gyrate around a dark bead, providing depth to the engraved vortex swirling on the side. The vase is 9-1/2 inches (24 cm) diameter, 8 inches (20 cm) tall and in excellent condition. This splendid chawan (tea bowl) is the work of a relatively young and promising potter named Watanabe Aiko. In the land of pottery, women potters are still rare and it is always a pleasure to meet one with exceptional talent. Watanabe Aiko is now a recognized artist and this chawan, along with another one I am presenting in this catalog, clearly shows the coming of maturity of the craftswoman. With its running of gemlike bidoro (vitrified glaze) to the kodai (foot) and its pool of emerald, th... Click for details
