A second large pottery vase by Miyagawa Kiyoshi enclosed in the original signed wooden box and featured on the invitation card of his 1989 Takashimaya exhibition in Kyoto (included with the sale). This of course shows the level of respect the artist had for the piece, choosing it to represent himself to the world. Here he has chosen a more elegant form, the simple silhouette broken by a single plane through the center above which pools a deeper pool of pale green. Unlike the clear glaze of th... A squat vase by Bizen master Kakurezaki Ryuichi (b. 1950) enclosed in th original signed wooden box. A crisp line divides the upper pale ash coating and lower raw vitrified red clay. The vase is 11 inches (28 cm) wide, 9 inches (23 cm) tall and in perfect condition. It is likely that Ryuichi needs no introduction, one of the most well known of Bizen potters, he is interestingly originally not from Bizen but far off Nagasaki, which seems to have gifted him with the ability to see the clays pot... This majestic piece is a mizusahi, a container used during the tea ceremony as a fresh water jar. The mizusashi is an important utensil to that noble art, which is at the origin of Shino pottery, and it is only natural that Suzuki Goro would have revisited the genre. With this particular piece, the potter has chosen to play with the fluidity of the forms and the colors, as to pay homage to the precious liquid which seems to flow endlessly out of the jar, embracing its protective vessel. The m... Click for details
