Here is yet another fantastic chawan (tea bowl) by Suzuki Goro, whose joyful spirit has shaped a new kind of tea ceremony ware. The colorful series of bowls made with clay from Los Angeles, brings an air of amazement and gaiety to the tea drinking experience, and it certainly stirs conversations. This particular bowl, like the Californians, pleases by its looks, yet it remains a very sensual piece. Suzuki Goro is a potter who goes beyond that usual appellation. He has developed a unique way o... Click for details

This oribe chawan (tea bowl) is probably one of the most spectacular ever made. Oribe chawan first burst into tea ceremony rooms more than four hundred years ago, bringing their asymmetrical shapes, their cobalt green robes and their abstract motifs. Their design contrasted with the rounder and more somber Raku bowls. This particular bowl, made by Suzuki Goro, has kept the fresh look of the first Oribe bowls. The master craftsman has also insufflated his creative energy into it, giving it an... Click for details

Kuro Shino (black Shino) is an original style of Shino pottery invented by Suzuki Goro, a potter who never ceases to create his craft anew. The result is this exceptional chawan (tea bowl), a fresh mixture of modern and traditional, where the abstract motifs, which resembles those seen on classic oribe ware, seem to come out invigorated by the magnetic black bowl. And here, too, the kodai (foot) offers a strong show of strength and Taoist harmony. Suzuki Goro is a potter who goes beyond that ... Click for details

This is a rare Kuro Oribe chawan (black oribe tea bowl) by Suzuki Goro. Once more, the prodigy of Seto has adapted a Mino ware tradition to the creative will of its free spirit, and this time again, the marriage of orthodoxy and modernism has born a wonderful piece with a perfect balance between all its elements: white and black, small and large, rough and smooth. The kodai (foot) is a wonderful sight; it looks like a source of light flowing down to fill the jet black void. Suzuki Goro is a ... Click for details

This remarkable bowl is the work of Mukunoki Eizo, born in 1942 in the city of Masuda, located in the Southern part of Honshu on the Sea of Japan. From 1958, he studied with the great ceramist Kawai Kanjiro (1890-1966) and his nephew Takeichi (1908-1989). He became independent in 1968 and established his kiln in Hyogo prefecture in 1974. The bowl is designated as a Kure bowl, Kure being the ancient name of China, in Japanese. It clearly shows Kawai Kanjiro’s influence, a potter who was one o... Click for details

Hatano Hideo had a lot of fun creating these small Hagi block vases; he told me so last week at his Tokyo Mitsukoshi exhibition. There are three glaze styles here as seen in the photos and the pieces can be placed at an angle or as you wish. One small opening accommodates a small flower; a very nice piece for a desk to refresh one's eyes after looking at a computer all day. Or on the table, or windowsill or coffee table...these are fun indeed. Each in perfect condition with a signed box, 7.8-8.0... Click for details

Hagi potter Hatano Hideo(b.1971)studied under his father Zenzo, a Hagi Intangible Cultural Property. I have long admired Zenzo's work for its gracefulness, splendid clay, and exquisite glazes. I later found out Hideo has been mixing the latter two for a number of years. Hideo studied sculpture at Tama Art University and ceramics in Kyoto. His work was selected for inclusion at the Japan Traditional Arts and Crafts exhibition in 2002 and 2004 and also again in 2005 where his piece was selected fo... Click for details
