A large Kashiki sweets dish decorated with white blossoming plum on iron shaded with blue-gray by Shino Legend Hayashi Shotaro enclosed in the original signed wooden box. The thick blue clings to the iron, seemingly anchored into the su-ana pinholes so characteristic of Shino ware. The vessel is roughly 9-1/2 inches (24 cm) square, over 3 inches (8.5 cm) tall and in perfect condition. The original exhibition price was over 1,500 dollars. This amazing chawan (tea bowl) was made by Ema Hiroshi in the fall of 2007. The potter fires his kilns only twice a year, and his works are always awaited with much anticipation. This particular bowl is certainly one of the main attractions of the autumnal production. The way the natural ashes have dressed the chawan in cascading glaze is divine and awe inspiring. Fire and earth, companions of the potter and guided by his creative spirit, have conspired to bear this marvelous vessel, which p... Click for details

The Miwa family now boast 3 ningen kokuho ( living national treasures ) and the current head is Miwa Jusetsu ( Ryusaku). Miwa Kazuhiko is his brother and a much respected artist. This Hagi chawan is large and in Kazuhiko's distinctive sculptural style. It is one of the finest pieces I have seen by him. I would guess this would retail for $6000 or more in Japan. Fine rich glaze, perfectly fired fine clay. Just a great piece. 4 7/8" diameter by 4" tall, singed by artist in signed box with ... Click for details

Here is yet another fantastic chawan (tea bowl) by Suzuki Goro, whose joyful spirit has shaped a new kind of tea ceremony ware. The colorful series of bowls made with clay from Los Angeles, brings an air of amazement and gaiety to the tea drinking experience, and it certainly stirs conversations. This particular bowl, like the Californians, pleases by its looks, yet it remains a very sensual piece. Suzuki Goro is a potter who goes beyond that usual appellation. He has developed a unique way o... Click for details
