One of the most wonderful characteristics of Iga ware is the bidoro (vitrified glass) effect on a pottery. This fabulous cup is crowned by a wonderful diadem of green gems and the kodai (foot) rivals with the mouth in marvels. This enchanting piece seems to be born from a dream and destined to be hidden in a treasure box. Yet it is when used that it will reveal its true beauty. The cup was made by Watanabe Aiko, born in 1971 in Osaka. She graduated from Kyoto Saga University of Art in 1992 a... Click for details

A thick coating of green glass covers the burnt terracotta clay of this misshapen Teapot by Iga representative Atarashi Kanji enclosed in the original signed wooden box. The form is scraped and gashed and pushed and contorted, very pleasing to the touch and eye. It is 9-1/2 inches (24.5 cm) tall, roughly 6 inches (15.5 cm) diameter and in perfect condition, as is the wooden box. Kanji was born in Osaka in 1944, and graduated the Osaka College of Craft design. After 3 years in Kobe, and 4 in ... Click for details

This is yet another splendid oni-hagi guinomi (sake cup) made by Yamato Nobuaki, born in 1956. This cup is also a perfect example of the sensuous charm of that kind of pottery, popularized by Miwa Jusetsu (the eleventh Miwa Kyusetsu). And like all bodies of character, the foot is an essential component that reveals much about that character. For this particular piece, it seems the silky body stands on a pedestal where the awesome play of clay and glaze gives it a strong sense of balance. The... Click for details
