If you've ever been to a true Japanese meal then you know the wondrous variety of vessels that appear throughout the course. From lowly chopstick rests--hashioki--to large bowls--hachi--the forms and styles are a visual 'meal' in and of themselves. Here is a such a visual delight in this set of five plates, as well as being a fine example of Kouchi Hidetoshi's Oribe. The size is more for appetizers and such. Each plate 2cm.tallx15cm.x15cm., signed on base, no box. We have two sets to offer.

A rare and unusual, rectangular ceramic plate with a minimalistic, deeply incised semi-abstract landscape. Partly covered by olive, iron and blue-grey ash glaze. Signed on the back in both English transcription and Japanese and front w. his mark: Kenji Ushiku (b. 1922). A large Oribe platter by Kishimoto Kennin enclosed in the original signed wooden box. The rough edge is sculpted as if half dry when formed, deeply abraded along the outside edge, and signed underneath. The plate is 16 inches (40 cm) diameter and in perfect condition but for a thin scratch in the glaze extending from the center (see photos).
