A radical Iga Koro incense burner by unconventional artist Kishimoto Kennin (b. 1934) enclosed in the original signed and stamped wooden box. Red clay studded with shiseki feldspathic stnone is worked into a globular form with three triangular windows, the sides fissured by deep folds in the clay. The piece is 6-1/2 inches (17 cm) tall and in perfect condition. The wild man of the Japanese ceramic art world--and master potter--Koie Ryoji revived his 1989-90 Chernobyl series last year in a very limited edition--all different--and here is one work from that series. Koie pulverized production line Seto chawan to make the grainy-brittle mound that sits atop a fire brick base. He placed a glass bottle into the clay that melted during the firing leaving light green and purple tones. Stamped with Chernobyl and 2006, the work is political-social and artistic s... This sculpture is part of a series of statuettes made in 2006 by Suzuki Goro, one of the best known and acclaimed contemporary ceramists in the world. At 65, he has reached an unequaled level of technical mastery; he is known as a “rokuro” prodigy since his apprenticeship. He now gradually puts aside the potter’s wheel and works more with his hands only. The wonderful Raku tea bowl exhibition last year in Tokyo was the result of such work. And here is another one. As always, Suzuki Goro’s ... Click for details

Mary Barringer, widely exhibited, published, and collected, is well known for her "drawing" with slips, and some subtle incising, adding definition and incredible character to her pieces. This is a very special early piece and is a rare type of work for Barringer. It has had a single owner since it was created over 20 years ago. I'm not sure if the four feet are obvious in the photos, but they raise the piece up from its surface at least an inch. The piece is thick walled and heavy. Her effect i... Click for details
