A rare and unique vase in stoneware by Jørgen MOGENSEN.* The body of the vase is divided into two sections, one broad and one narrow, and is decorated with a creamy, off-white glaze on brown together with irregular bands in underglaze blue. Signed JM (artist’s monogram). Design F381. Ca. 1970. H 15.5 cm, W 12.5 cm. Condition: Perfect.

The AUTUMN IN LONGQUAN is a contemporary Chinese Longquan celadon artwork by Chen Aiming. The artist Mr. Chen Aiming cleverly used the pottery clay from Yixing (the material for Chinese famous Zisha teapot) and inserted into the main body to create the cloud pattern that autumn arrive in longquan. This large hanaire (vase) was made by Unokawa Kazumasa. It is a more personal work from the Tenmoku master craftsman. The mineral and organic qualities of the vase give it a powerful aura. In ancient Japan, people thought every thing had a spirit and was respected as such. This piece, which could also have been found along the old path to a sacred shrine, seems to possess a holy life of its own, and here again, we have evidence of the cosmic link between this potter and his work.

A large Shinshoku Ware-Tsubo eroded through natural processes during firing with a shattered rim attached to the body at the shoulder. This piece is a virtual textbook on Yohen firing effects. Tamadare, Shinshoku, koge and other effects are supplanted by a large white kutsuki on the front, all under the shadow of the shattered rim fused to the shoulder.
