This colorful peacock has been created by the Mixe artisan group, from the Mixe region of eastern Oaxaca state. They have been creating distinctive folkart for a quarter of a century. The body of the carving has a blue neck and a mottled feather design in a variety of colorful shades on the front and back, with its sides also painted various colors. Bird Carving by Art Jackson of Ohio, born 1920's. Each Native American Song Bird species is carved in a type of wood which the carver felt corresponded most closely to the nature of the species. The birds are stained, versus painted, with pin eyes, and at the base of the sculpture's stand is indicated both the species and the type of wood used. Ten songbirds in total, measures 15 inches tall. Dated at 1989.
