Kokeshi, wooden folk toy of NE Japan. Height: 17". This is an example of the "Naruko-kei" tradition of Miyagi Prefecture. The artisan was Moriya Kazuo, who was born on Septemeber 4th, 1928 (Showa 3.) Kokeshi, wooden folk toy of NE Japan. Height: 13.5".
This example is of "Tougatta-kei" tradition, generally made in Miyagi Prefecture. But, this particular artisan, Ouhara Masakichi, lived in the city of Noboribetsu in Hokkaido. Ouhara-san was born in 1907 and passed away on June 8th, 1982 (Showa 57.) The doll was made in November of Showa 51 (1976.) It has a green patterned body and legs, with its back painted in two sections, one rosy-pink and one blue, both with a detailed overlay pattern. Long antennae are red and black stripes. A master of detail, much sought-after Oaxacan artisan Eleazar Morales has created this wonderful lying dog. The style is known as a "hang dog," which is a carving that lies flat with its head hanging over the edge of a shelf and looks down. The body of the very curious dog is a mottled mocha tan accented with darker mocha and rust free-form markings. The face is highlighted with tan around the eyes, nose and mouth. Mario and Reina Castellanos, well-known Oaxacan artisans, have created this handsome cream-colored iguana. It has a dark green and black geometric design down the back and tail, with a blue edge. There is a purple design mid-body and on the legs a blue and green design. The feet are black with red nails. The iguana has a beautiful, flowing tail, a signature of the Castellanos.
