83” Length x 50.5 Width This rare hand-woven Ikat from Sumba Island is dated over 40 years old and in excellent condition with the exception of two small holes. This cotton ikat was dyed with traditional island vegetation and woven on a backstrap loom. The design motifs featured are ten Sumbanese men portrayed in the traditional style and four water buffalo that symbolize wealth. Geometric designs in tan and indigo divide the piece vertically. A "crazy" (or is it "Quazy"?) quilt found in the Midwest. Crazy quilts were made from fragments of miscellaneous fabrics in patterns that may have appeared crazy. In this case there is an especially rich variety of fabrics in use, including silk, which in some cases has deteriorated (see detail photos). This wonderfully detailed Navajo pictorial weaving dimensions 21 ½ inches by 28 inches which makes it perfect for a wall hanging was purchased about five years ago in Gallup, New Mexico. When purchased, the tag read E. Benally, a common Navajo name, and the dealers specialized in direct dealings with Navajo families. This was a long-standing trading family, not a new import company. This little weaving is in mint condition, no holes or stains or missing fringe. And the colors are wonderful. The blue is not a navy or a turquoise but a teal kind of azure blue...different but beautiful. It sets off the other colors perfectly. This is a vintage like new BLUE FISH top from 1993. It has been in storage since 1993. I do not think I ever wore it. Not sure what the size is. Probably large. Reddish orange/brown color.
