A wonderful figural fob seal depicting England’s patron St. George defeating the dragon. The design is worked primarily in silver, but the horse’s bridle, the dragon’s dorsal ridge and the saint’s spear and shield are worked in yellow gold. The gold base encloses a flat malachite that was never engraved. Tested and guaranteed sterling silver and 18K gold.

Origin: probably England, ca. 1860. Condition: very good, some light dings on the mounting around the stone consistent with age...

According to some, this is St. Catherine, patroness of young maidens and female scholars. There is a (“Catherine”?) wheel in the background (it could also be a spinning wheel or a ship's wheel), and a flower in the foreground. Her clothing looks very Renaissance to us. Marked “SILVER” on the C-clasp, with an illegible maker’s mark, the metal tests as sterling, and she’s a dainty 7/8” in diameter. 2.5g. In excellent condition, and circa 1850...

Joan is one of the patron saints of France, and patron saint of soldiers. This is an intricate design by Edmond-Henri Becker, well-known French medalist. The front of this piece shows Joan of Arc in profile, also a shield decorated with a sword, a crown, and 2 fleurs-de-lis. Above her head is a banner saying “1429” and “Jehanne d’Arc”. The back shows a banner with a saint (or possibly the Madonna and Child – the metal is a bit worn here) with two people praying...

This striking brooch features flowers (probably poppies) with curved flowing lines, mounted on a mother-of-pearl ova, is so pretty! Poppies have symbolized sleep (hello, “Wizard of Oz”!), rest, and eternal life. The flower is silver plate, and is worn on the high places (we find that those bits actually serve as highlights). The mother of pearl is convex. It measures 1-3/4” x 1-3/8”. The pin assembly is mounted on a base metal plaque, and is of the old style...

This intriguing locket has a saint, probably St. Peter, holding a key (to the church? To heaven?), and with a bird – a dove? - in the background) on one side. On the other is a photograph of an ecclesiastical-looking person. It contains a touched relic (a bit of ribbon which has been touched to a saint’s bone or something worn by a saint), a tiny metal medal with Mary on one side, saying "Mary conceived without sin” and more Christian imagery on the other, and a wisp of cotton...

This heavily engraved pin is from the estate of Helen Aman, who escaped from the Bolshevik Revolution to (eventually) settle in California - it was one of her childhood jewels. It consists of a bell (with a clapper – but it doesn’t actually chime) dangling from an angled bar. Marked 84 for 875 silver, it also has a partial city mark, probably for Moscow. It measures 1-3/8” x 7/8", and is in excellent antique condition, with a nice patina...

Strange yet wonderful, and SO Victorian! Here is a grooming chatelaine from the 1800s. It has a Chinese fish motif at the top, and dangling from that are 3 implements, a tweezers, an ear-cleaning device, and a third implement for cleaning nails. (We just saw a similar chatelaine on eBay that was advertised as a device for opium users, but we don’t think so!) It is unmarked but tests positive for silver, and with a patina consistent with age...

A Victorian engraved silver dome pin brooch with a purple glass stone. This late 19th century 1-5/8 x 1-1/8" pin features a bezel-set purple glass stone and it has ornate hand-engraving. It is unsigned but it tests as high grade silver and it is most likely Scandinavian. It has the original c-clasp, it weighs 4.4 grams and it is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, dents, bends, corrosion, losses, damage or repairs other than a bit of expected wear to the soft glass stone...

For gilt silver cufflinks to have a finish this sunny after more than a century is frankly miraculous. We can tell this is high-carat gold from the color and it was obviously applied in abundance, but the only adequate explanation for such a lack of wear is lack of use.

The next owner will make up for that, we hope, since there's no much here to enjoy: the impressively large (3/4" x 1/2") domed faces; their ornate edges including Art Nouveau scrollwork; the handsome chain connectors an...
