Weird but wonderful, and SO Victorian! Here is a grooming chatelaine from the 1800s. It has a Chinese fish motif at the top, and dangling from that are 3 implements, a tweezers, an ear-cleaning device, and a third implement for cleaning nails. (We just saw a similar chatelaine on eBay that was advertised as a device for opium users, but we don’t think so!) It is unmarked but tests positive for silver, and with a patina consistent with age...

According to some, this is St. Catherine, patroness of young maidens and female scholars. There is a (“Catherine”?) wheel in the background (it could also be a spinning wheel or a ship's wheel), and a flower in the foreground. Her clothing looks very Renaissance to us. Marked “SILVER” on the C-clasp, with an illegible maker’s mark, the metal tests as sterling, and she’s a dainty 7/8” in diameter. 2.5g. In excellent condition, and circa 1850...

Joan is one of the patron saints of France, and patron of soldiers. This is an intricate design by Edmond-Henri Becker, well-known French medalist. The front of this piece shows Joan of Arc in profile, also a shield decorated with a sword, a crown, and 2 fleurs-de-lis. Above her head is a banner saying “1429” and “Jehanne d’Arc”. The back shows a banner with a saint (or possibly the Madonna and Child – hard to tell) with two people praying...

This Scottish sterling silver agate pin is circa 1860. It is a rare form of a penannular, a traditional brooch. It is unique in utilizing only Montrose grey agates, as well as its simplicity of form. I have long admired and collected Scottish jewelry for its singular beauty. Scottish jewelry became very popular when Queen Victoria visited Balmoral, her castle in the Highlands. She adorned herself with Scottish jewelry and dressed her children in tartans...

This striking brooch features flowers – poppies? – with curved flowing lines, mounted on a mother-of-pearl oval. Poppies have symbolized sleep (hello, Dorothy!), rest, and eternal life. The flower is silver plate, and is worn on the high places (I find that the worn places actually serve as highlights). The mother of pearl is convex. It measures 1-3/4” x 1-3/8”. The pin assembly is mounted on a base metal plaque, and is of the old style. It rattles a little, but is firmly in place...

The allure of the serpent in jewelry is as relevant today as it was through the centuries. The snake, symbolizes everlasting love and became very popular when Prince Albert presented Queen Victoria with a snake ring upon their betrothal. This intriguing locket has a saint, probably St. Peter, holding a key (to the church? To heaven?), and with a bird – a dove? - in the background) on one side. On the other is a photograph of an ecclesiastical-looking person. It contains a touched relic (a bit of ribbon which has been touched to a saint’s bone or something worn by a saint), a tiny metal medal with Mary on one side, saying "Mary conceived without sin” and more Christian imagery on the other, and a wisp of cotton. Wouldn’t ...
