Watercolor on paper, unframed, unsigned, dated 1924 and titled "Col Spgs", showing old houses against a mountain backdrop. This is a beautifully executed work by an artist that I would imagine is listed, but, he didn't sign his work. The sheet measures 12" by 17 3/4". There is a sketch of a man's profile on the reverse. If you live along I-25, or even if you don't, you will appreciate this fine old drawing from Colorado Springs, where the Broadmoor art colony flourished.

Oil on canvasboard, 12" by 16" (17" by 21" as framed), signed at lower right by artist CURT PAULSON. I do not see a listing but the artist had a skilled hand. The style reminds a bit of California desert painters William Darling or Fred Chisnall. There is impasto, vigorous brush stroke, and a grayish blue light over the scene. Apparently original whitish antiqued frame completes this ready for the wall package. Condition is excellent.

Monochromatic landscape on masonite, 20" by 16" and 4" wide frame/liner, with wagon and sod or adobe structures, signed at lower right "G. NIBLETT". This is a work by noted western American artist GARY NIBLETT (1943-), listed in Samuels' book "Contemporary Western Artists". Niblett has been a member of the prestigious Cowboy Artists of America since 1976. His works have sold into the tens of thousands at major auctions of western art...

Oil on canvas painting, 12" by 20", unframed, signed at lower right by the well known Australian impressionist, HAYWARD VEAL (1913-1968). This is a vigorously painted landscape in greens and browns, enlivened by bold Key Lime bright light green daubs at top. Veal's works appear frequently at auctions of Australian art, where they can bring to the $5,000 area and above. He is known for his highly impressionistic landscapes and still life, with portraiture rounding out his body of work...

Watercolor on paper, 16 1/4" by 16 1/4" inside the mat (and 27 1/4" by 27 1/4" as framed), signed at lower right by listed, noted Southern California watercolor artist DON FAY. This is a colorful, beautifully executed work, which previously sold for $2000 at a John Moran auction (THIS EXACT PIECE DID). Condition is excellent with vibrant colors and no foxing/fading. The frame is functional and all in all the piece is ready for the wall...

Oil on board, measuring 13 1/2" by 13 1/2" and 1 1/2" wide gold frame, unsigned, depicting a number of California poppies vignetted against a neutral background. This is a very decorative painting of the California state flower, executed in late Victorian times or early 20th century when such paintings were all the vogue. This one has survived in excellent condition and would be perfect for a Mission, Arts and Crafts, or Southwest style interior. Frame has small losses.

Oil on canvas, 40 1/2" by 32", in thin wood frame, signed at lower right and dated "57" by important twentieth century German artist ERNST FRITSCH (1892-1965), an artist mentioned in the same sentences as Bruno Krauskopf, Dix, Grosz, and other German art world giants of the twenties. Fritsch was born in Berlin and died there, and in between made a permanent mark on the art scene. He had joined the Berlin Secession in 1919, after having served in World War I...

Oil on canvas painting of a child, 15" by 12" plus present framing several inches wide on a side, signed at lower left and dated there 1927 or possibly 1929. This is a work by the noted American woman impressionist, MARY FAIRCHILD LOW (1858-1946). Her skill in Impressionism was refined by her time at the Giverny art colony in France and on Cape Ann, Massachusetts. Note the impressionistically rendered clothing contrasted with the finished face...

By the famous and prolific English 19th century dog artist EDWARD ARMFIELD (1817-1896), this is a classic painting of no less than three terriers chasing a rodent down a hole, and, apparently, finally cornering him there. The work, signed at lower left, is titled on the reverse overlap in the hand of the artist (also signed again nearby by the artist on the overlap) "Caught At Last" (great title!!). The oil on canvas measures 12" by 16" (17" by 21 1/4" framed)...

Oil on board painting of a harbor with small boats, 11 3/4" by 14", (15 1/2" by 17 1/2" in stained oak frame), said by a handwritten note on the reverse to be Morro Bay in central California. The note reads "View of Morro Bay/by Mary Harrington on trip of California coast with friends Mr. & Mrs. Dan Castro 1961". The painting might be signed by the artist at lower right; difficult to see among the browned varnish...

This is a wonderful large watercolor (18 1/2" by 27"----28" by 36" as framed) executed in the nineteenth century by English artist WALTER TOMLINSON (ca. 1833-1909). The scene is Ann Hathaway's famous cottage in Stratford-on-Avon, which Shakespeare lovers will recognize as the town associated closely with the Bard himself. When I first saw this I assumed it was a print and was amazed to find that it was indeed an original work of art...

An interesting painting of a brick church dramatically positioned in a rural landscape with distant mountains, the year 1898 appearing on the lintel over the door, signed at lower right corner "K. Shuck". Online research shows there was a Kenneth M. Shuck associated with the Springfield Museum of Art, having served as its second director, between 1951 and 1976. A 1954 photo online shows him standing in front of a Thomas Hart Benton painting. This may be by that individual...

An impressionistic watercolor painting of a tree and brushy field, 9" by 8" (13" by 12" in wood frame), signed at lower left and dated there 1929 by artist EMMY LOU OSBORNE. I do not see biographical information on the artist but clearly she was a talented watercolorist. Condition is excellent.

A pretty circa 1950 still life on Masonite board, 18" by 24" (26 1/2" by 32 1/2" framed), the subject given on the reverse as "Red Camellia Bouquet", signed at lower right and again on the reverse by German-born artist JOHN WILLIAM ORTH (1889-1976). Orth was born in Bavaria and studied art in Europe before fleeing for the United States in 1923 for political reasons. For a time he was in Texas and later painted in California, and he is today most associated with those states. Orth painted a wi...

A very poetic landscape, oil on board, 18" by 13" (24 1/2" by 19 1/2" in gold frame), the scene an idyllic mountain setting, a large and important-looking house at left, a water wheel at right powering a mill, a tiny female figure and goats at left relaxing on a lawn. The light is luminous, handled well by an obviously talented hand. The artist, who signed at lower left in green, is FERDINAND SOMMER (1822-1901). On the back of the board is written in pencil in old hand "Muhle Goldau" (mill, G...

A work over forty years old but very contemporary and stylish in feeling, a watercolor of young female bicycle riders at the beach perhaps, 14" by 21" (23" by 29" framed), signed at lower right by well listed California artist DOUGLASS EWELL PARSHALL (1899-1990). The work is also titled "CYCLISTS" on backing, where the artist has signed again, dated it 1972, and wrote address and, on an affixed sheet, "For West Coast Watercolor Soc'y". Parshall was born in New York City and by the age of 15 wa...

Original watercolor on paper, 6" by 10" (12" by 16" as framed), signed at lower right "William J. Schaldach, Jr." and inscribed at left "To Nellie, with love, from Billy". This could be an oriole but I am not an ornithologist. This is a very clean work and it appears not to have been opened since the 1960's or 1970's. A few tiny black spots visible in some photos are on the glass and not the art itself. The artist is a well recognized painter and printmaker of wildlife and sporting art, incl...
