Fine oil on canvas painting of a quiet street and buildings on a gray day in winter, possibly Montmartre, signed at lower right by the highly regarded French School of Montmartre painter ALPHONSE-LEON QUIZET (1885-1955). Quizet though not a household name today, was a significant figure in the group of artists painting the bohemian, and in some parts, country-like Montmartre neighborhood on the outskirts of Paris in the first half of the century...

This is most unusual for art of its type in that the work is in crisp blue and white only. Oil on canvasboard, 12" by 16" (17" by 21" as framed), signed at lower right by artist CURT PAULSON. I do not see a listing but the artist had a skilled hand. The style reminds a bit of California desert painters William Darling or Fred Chisnall. There is impasto, vigorous brush stroke, and a grayish blue light over the scene. Apparently original whitish antiqued frame completes this ready for the wall package. Condition is excellent.

Oil on canvas painting, 12" by 20", unframed, signed at lower right by the well known Australian impressionist, HAYWARD VEAL (1913-1968). This is a vigorously painted landscape in greens and browns, enlivened by bold Key Lime bright light green daubs at top. Oil on board, measuring 13 1/2" by 13 1/2" and 1 1/2" wide gold frame, unsigned, depicting a number of California poppies vignetted against a neutral background. This is a very decorative painting of the California state flower, executed in late Victorian times or early 20th century when such paintings were all the vogue. This one has survived in excellent condition and would be perfect for a Mission, Arts and Crafts, or Southwest style interior. Frame has small losses.

By the famous and prolific English 19th century dog artist EDWARD ARMFIELD (1817-1896), this is a classic painting of no less than three terriers chasing a rodent down a hole, and, apparently, finally cornering him there. The work, signed at lower left, is titled on the reverse overlap in the hand of the artist (also signed again nearby by the artist on the overlap) "Caught At Last" (great title!!). The oil on canvas measures 12" by 16" (17" by 21 1/4" framed)...

An interesting painting of a brick church dramatically positioned in a rural landscape with distant mountains, the year 1898 appearing on the lintel over the door, signed at lower right corner "K. Shuck". Online research shows there was a Kenneth M. Shuck associated with the Springfield Museum of Art, having served as its second director, between 1951 and 1976. A 1954 photo online shows him standing in front of a Thomas Hart Benton painting. This may be by that individual...

A pretty circa 1950 still life on Masonite board, 18" by 24" (26 1/2" by 32 1/2" framed), the subject given on the reverse as "Red Camellia Bouquet", signed at lower right and again on the reverse by German-born artist JOHN WILLIAM ORTH (1889-1976). Orth was born in Bavaria and studied art in Europe before fleeing for the United States in 1923 for political reasons. For a time he was in Texas and later painted in California, and he is today most associated with those states. Orth painted a wi...

A very poetic landscape, oil on board, 18" by 13" (24 1/2" by 19 1/2" in gold frame), the scene an idyllic mountain setting, a large and important-looking house at left, a water wheel at right powering a mill, a tiny female figure and goats at left relaxing on a lawn. The light is luminous, handled well by an obviously talented hand. The artist, who signed at lower left in green, is FERDINAND SOMMER (1822-1901). On the back of the board is written in pencil in old hand "Muhle Goldau" (mill, G...

ORIGINAL work, not a print as is commonly seen, 19" by 24" as framed, signed at lower right in white by the noted Croatian or Yugoslavian naive folk painter JOVAN OBICAN (1918-1986).
