A rare, historical, early pastel on heavy paper laid to card drawing of a young Zuni indian girl in Arizona, unsigned, circa late 19th century, including the original gold mat, decorated with images of tipis and spears. The work measures 18" by 12" (entire mat) and 12 3/4" by 6 1/4" inside the mat. Sadly, the old antique work has been damaged. There is a darkened diagonal stain that extends from upper right down across the front of the face and into the hair...

A vintage, old, pastel on paper drawing of old steep-roofed houses in a mountain landscape, 10 1/2" by 15 1/2" (14 1/2" by 19" as framed, no glass), signed at lower right corner with initials that appear as "SHC.". The work probably dates to the 1920's or 1930's, judging from the style, and framing materials. The old paper has browned heavily and one can see a ghost image of the drawing on the reverse side...

Beautifully executed pastel in subtle white, gray and tan, this is an image of Sacre Coeur and Montmartre in snow, signed at lower left by artist R. A. Badenhop. I am unable to locate an artist of this name, despite the obvious quality of the work, which measures 20" by 16 1/2" (27" by 23 1/2" framed). The empty streets, teeming with tourists and visitors on more pleasant summer days, make for an unusual sight in this famous and crowded section of Paris...

This is a fine pastel drawing of a young girl of about 3 looking directly at the viewer, the work signed at lower right by the Canadian master artist NICHOLAS DE GRANDMAISON (1892-1978). It measures 17 3/4" by 14" inside the mat (28 1/2" by 24" as framed). The artist is considered an important contributor to Canadian art history, his pastel drawings of Native peoples bringing into five figures at auctions. De Grandmaison was born in Moscow to nobility...

Large size (39" by 27 1/2" framed) pastel of hollyhocks in bloom, apparently unsigned, drawn on canvas. The work probably dates to the first third of the 20th century, when the flower was more popular and more commonly planted around houses. Most pastels are on paper, so a work on canvas is more unusual. Due to the size and the glass, a local Southern California buyer would be very welcomed. Except for a small bit of contact with the glass, the drawing is in fine condition.

There are several possibilities as to the identity of the (likely American) artist but even if listed the artist would not be major. A very accomplished pastel drawing in high key tropical-style colors, featuring a bird's eye view of the landscape around San Gimignano, the popular ancient Tuscan hilltop town in Italy, southwest of Florence, much beloved and frequented by tourists from around the world. The work, 13" by 10 1/4" (20" by 16" framed) is signed at lower right by contemporary artist Helen C. Butler. On the backing is a printed sticker of the artist giving the title. A fine landscape drawing in pastel by a skilled hand, Swiss-born artist MAXIM (MAXIMILIAN) SEIBOLD. The drawing measures 9 1/4" by 12 1/2" (13 1/4" by 16 1/2" in attractive probably original old gold framing---very light wear). Seibold was a competent and talented artist, very active around the year 1920, who seems to have left behind little biographical information. Born in Switzerland, he evidently came to America at least by the 'teens, as drawings of Florida and elsewhere are known...

An old pastel drawing of a New England landscape in winter, 11 1/2" by 17 1/2" (18 1/2" by 22" framed), signed at lower right "MORRIS". The work is after the noted American artist GEORGE HENRY DURRIE (1820-1863). The heartwarming scene of Americana includes yellow house at right, yellow and red outbuildings, sleighs, split rail fence, tiny figures and bare trees. It could also be in imitation of Currier and Ives lithographs of Durrie's works...

A vintage pastel drawing of wood and thatch traditional homes on stilts in a shallow estuary at sunset, 11 3/4" by 17 3/4" (18 1/2" by 24" framed), signed at lower left "Lohmann" and dated there 1939. On the reverse is an old framer's label from Manila, the Philippines, and written in handwriting on the backing is "Zamboanga, P.I.". I believe Zamboanga is in Mindanao Island in the southern part of the country...

The Black Rock of course is best known as the site of the Burning Man festival, held every year in northwestern Nevada in one of the most remote locations in the lower 48 states. An accomplished, very western American pastel drawing on paper of a frontiersman, (11" by 9", and 15 1/4" by 13 3/4" as simply framed), signed at lower right "Lea" and with copyright symbol. I sent images to the Tom Lea (1907-2001) Institute in El Paso, Texas, thinking this may be by that well-known artist but they responded that it is not. Therefore, it is offered as simply a nice drawing with a lot of western appeal. Likely date of execution circa 1970's or 1980's.

Circa 1900 American pastel landscape drawing, 22 1/2" by 9 3/4" (29" by 15" framed), apparently unsigned, in the style of William Chandler and the pastel school of the period. The work is framed behind non-glare glass, which blurs the detail. Condition appears to be excellent. The vertical format would fit your hard-to-fit narrow wall.
