Pastel by Sir George Clausen (1852-1944) England, titled "Ploughing the Field," ("plowing" would be the American spelling). Clausen often created quick studies in preparation for finished works. This piece appears to be one of those Studies, in that the figures are impressionistic and quickly sketched. A man guides a hand-plough, being pulled by two large animals. Sunlight is just beginning to break over the hill, and furrows may be seen in the soil to the right...

From Salem Academy. Artist is from Salem, NC, 1848-1905. Has remained in the Spach / Goslen family since ca. 1865. Painting has a tear in the center bottom portion, repaired with archival tape, along with foxing, staining and waviness in the upper left corner. Paper measures 14 1/8" x 19 1/8."

Pastel, mounted on Canvas, appears to be likeness of Peter Paul Rubens, (Flemish, 1577-1640) [also "Pierre," "Paolo." Unsigned, we do not know the actual age and origin of this piece, although it is possibly Dutch. This wonderful Pastel is, to say the least, quite well executed by a very skilled artist.

Sight is 15.5" x 12.5". Very good condition with minor losses around edges, and some finish losses to the frame. Free U.S. Shipping.

French School, c. 1785 Pastel on card. A pair of portraits depicting a husband and wife. The woman, with powdered hair, is wearing a peach and white gown, matching bow in her hair, and a multi-strand pearl choker around her neck. the man, with powdered hair, tied en queue, wears a red coat over a white shirt with frilled cravat and a peach coloured waist coat, which matches madams gown. Gilt frames. Rectangular, each, 41.5 cms. X 32 cms. (16 1/2 inches X 12 1/2 inches).
