A vibrant pastel landscape framed under glass in a period frame. Signed very indistinctly in the lower right corner, the name appears to be E.S. Kulnic, E. Skolnic or E.S.Rolnic (please see companion piece.) Due to the backing there are small bumps within the sky but not noticeable from a distance. Reframing would be advisable. The picture measures 11-1/2" x 24", the frame 15-1/2"x 27". Not examined out of the frame.

Appears to be in excellent condition; not examined out of frame. On close examination, unidentified watermarks may be seen the width of the painting near the top; plus an additional partial watermark lower right...

This is a beautiful portrait of Auguste Schmidt-Trapp, the mother of Gerhardt (Georg) von Trapp, whose life was commemorated in the famous "Sound of Music" play and movie. This interesting Chalk and Pastel shows a sinister scene of a group of wreckers in the process of plundering a sailing boat,
having just lured it onto the menacing rocks, an unfortunate soul frantically waving for help.
A ruined castle on the hilltop completes this narrative scene.

Pastel by Sir George Clausen (1852-1944) England, titled "Ploughing the Field," ("plowing" would be the American spelling). Clausen often created quick studies in preparation for finished works. This piece appears to be one of those Studies, in that the figures are impressionistic and quickly sketched. A man guides a hand-plough, being pulled by two large animals. Sunlight is just beginning to break over the hill, and furrows may be seen in the soil to the right...
