Color drypoint and aquatint printed (1947) in olive green and black on cream wove paper (Arches), offered gallery framed (appears in great condition, but not examined outside of the frame, light toning as expected). Second state of 2, signed in pencil by the artist and numbered 10/30. A rare early work by an important artist who used the same subject in a number of media, including a regular drypoint version of the same image in a larger edition of 80 (first state).

A very lovely mezzotint print by Kaoru Saito. Executed in shades of black, greys and white, it portrays a woman with a shawl and, in the background, rippling hills, a bird and a new moon. It is numbered # 36/60 and measures 17 3/8" by 15 1/8" – the image is 11 1/8" by 9 3/4". Mint condition – never framed, dated 1978.

Saito Kaoru lives in Kanagawa Prefecture, where he was born. He is basically self-taught in the difficult mezzotint medium...

Sometimes I find it difficult to determine if the colors have been applied to a single plate or if the print has been made with a separate plate for each color. This print feels as if it was printed with more than one plate because of the mixing of colors in some places and the clean separation in others...

The print itself measures 4 1/2" by 3 7/8" - it is beautifully matted and framed in a silver painted wooden frame that measures 12 1/2" by 12". It is signed and dated in pencil at the lower right "Nobuo Sato" and it's edition number is 34/100. The print and frame are in excellent condition. We date it to the late 1960s - 1970s...
