A pair of early 19th century portrait miniatures in watercolor on paper, of a lady and gentleman identified as Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Hutchinson, by silhouette artist J. H. Gillespie. Gillespie worked in London, Edinburgh and Liverpool in the 1820’s before moving to North America. He was in Halifax, Nova Scotia in 1829, Baltimore in 1837 and Philadelphia in 1838 (he was also working in New York at some point). An amazing 18th century miniature caricature, featuring a print on glass, probably after Hogarth. The amusing subject depicts a woman confronted by a little devil. Mounted in an embossed leather surround set into an ebonized and gilt frame. Very good condition: scratches to glass; some discoloration to print, especially around the edges; backing has been replaced by glass. Measures 1 3/4” x 1 1/4”.

It is a bit different from the usual memorial pieces in that the tomb has the word “love” inscribed on it, as well as two doves nestled on the top representing love.
