A pair of early 19th century portrait miniatures in watercolor on paper, of a lady and gentleman identified as Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Hutchinson, by silhouette artist J. H. Gillespie. Gillespie worked in London, Edinburgh and Liverpool in the 1820’s before moving to North America. He was in Halifax, Nova Scotia in 1829, Baltimore in 1837 and Philadelphia in 1838 (he was also working in New York at some point). English portrait miniature in watercolor on ivory of a young gentleman, circa 1840. The sitter has a strong jaw adorned by sideburns and fashionably disheveled hair; he wears a black stock and coat over a white shirt. Set into papier mache frame. Good condition; white background may be over painted. Measures 5 1/4” by 4 1/2”; sight size is 2 3/4” by 2”.

An amazing 18th century miniature caricature, featuring a print on glass, probably after Hogarth. The amusing subject depicts a woman confronted by a little devil. Mounted in an embossed leather surround set into an ebonized and gilt frame. Very good condition: scratches to glass; some discoloration to print, especially around the edges; backing has been replaced by glass. Measures 1 3/4” x 1 1/4”.

Portrait miniature of a gentleman by Thomas Wogan of Dublin, c. 1775. The oval, water color on ivory portrait depicts a gentleman facing left, with powdered hair en queue, and brown eyes, he wears a scarlet jacket and white shirt and stock. Mounted in gilt metal brooch setting with split, seed-pearl border. Some dust under glass and scratch to glass. Fastening pin is also slightly loose. Miniature itself is in very good condition and brooch good condition.
