French School, c. 1790. Water color on ivory portrait of a gentleman. The circular head-and-shoulders portrait depicts a young gentleman with powdered hair and blue eyes, wearing a vivid blue coat with black collar and silver button, with a frilled shirt and stock. Under his left arm he carries his tricorn hat. Gilt metal slip in walnut frame. 7 cms. diameter (2 3/4 inches). Very good condition.

Unusual 19th century miniature portrait in watercolor on ivory of a gentleman, signed Yanez. The sitter is a dramatic young man with black hair and beard, white shirt and what appears to be a plaid, fur-trimmed dressing gown. Possibly Continental or South American. Signed over the left shoulder “Yanez” – one can just make out a first initial to the left of the signature, possibly a “J”. Later gilt metal frame. Delightful pair of late 18th century English portrait silhouettes, depicting a husband and wife, complete with identifying inscriptions. The silhouettes appear to have been drawn by different hands, evidenced by the dissimilar shape of the busts, the halo on the gent’s portrait, and the delicacy and detail of the lady’s bonnet and fichu. Fine American portrait miniature, circa 1810-1820, of John Bixby of New Hampshire. The portrait comes with provenance tracking the family to a Baltimore descendant. The sitter is a handsome curly red-haired gent, with a high white collar and cravat, and black coat. He’s set in half of a red leather traveling case. Bixby was born in Dublin, NH, in 1790, and married Jeanette Chapman in 1819 (perhaps this portrait was done for her!). Their daughter, Mary Elizabeth Bixby, married Edward Bigelow... Her unpowdered brown hair curls softly around her face. Barry was active between 1784-1827, when he exhibited at the Royal Academy.
