Watercolor and gouache on Whatman's artboard, 16 1/2 x 10 3/4 inches, 27 1/4 x 21 inches framed, signed lower right. Dawson was the most famous English dog portraitist of her time. She produced many etchings and book illustrations. She was also commissioned to paint the Royal Family's favorite Corgi, subsequently reproduced as a family Christmas card. Most of her canine subjects were small terriers and spaniels. This sensitive Chihuahua portrait is unusual in her oeuvre and most appealing.

This watercolor portrait was bought at auction in Paris. It is attributed to Leopold Stevens (1886-1935) who exhibited frequently at the Salon des Artistes Francais, and was awarded a bronze medal in 1900. He was known for portraits, genre,naval and landscape paintings. This one is an evocative portrait of an unknown person rendered in pastel colors.
