This watercolor portrait was bought at auction in Paris. It is attributed to Leopold Stevens (1886-1935) who exhibited frequently at the Salon des Artistes Francais, and was awarded a bronze medal in 1900. He was known for portraits, genre,naval and landscape paintings. This one is an evocative portrait of an unknown person rendered in pastel colors. Floral still life by Ben Shahn (American, 1898-1969) in watercolor and ink wash on cream wove paper. Signed and dated 1928. Some light foxing to paper. Size: 23.5 inches x 15.25 inches. Ben Shahn was a Lithuanian immigrant who was brought to Brooklyn when he was only eight years old. He studied as a lithographer and photographer before becoming the noted WPA artist, who is best known for his depictions of "social realism" following the Depression.

We continue to research the origin of this wonderful graphite and watercolor piece, possibly Canadian; signed, "Knudsen" lower right.
