Beautiful 18th century mourning miniature, in watercolor on ivory, featuring a kaleidoscope of little scenes. The large central shield-shaped tableau depicts a woman laying a wreath over two doves on a tomb. Around the perimeter are three smaller similar scenes: one of a woman laying a vine on a tomb, one of a woman laying a wreath on a flaming heart on a tomb, and one very unusual scene similar to the latter – except that the woman (and the entire scene) is black. Fine example of Shodou or Zen Calligraphy showing a very bold and fluid technique. Artist could not be identified by signature and seal. The kanji character reads "kei" which means wisdom, as opposed to phenomenal knowledge (Praj~naa according to Buddhism). Exact age unknown but condition suggests early Showa. Roller is black hollow lacquer. Overal fine condition. Mounting shows very minor signs of prior repair.... Click for details
