Julius Bloch, one of the prominent Jewish artists of Philadelphia, was a social realist painter whose subjects focused on the working classes. His admiration for Thomas Eakins, also a social realist, likely contributed to his interest in these subjects. For many years, he was a teacher at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and his message to students was that one needed to know life in order to paint life.
Bloch began his career painting floral still lives, but witnessing Depressio... Click for details

This wonderful watercolor on artist board of a Confederate cavalry officer in full uniform with rifle, sword and horse is by Southern American artist William Henry Brown (1808-1883). With touches of graphite and red and white gouache, the painting is signed lower right and dated 1882. Small, early 20th Century, Mixed Media (watercolor, gouache, pencil) on paper, signed by monogram, "MLW," lower right corner. This charming little painting bears a noticeable resemblance to the considerably more developed, and highly collectible works of Marion Kavanagh Wachtel, and includes those often present elements in her paintings of mountains, valley, and the stylized eucalyptus trees of California. Regrettably, however, we are completely uncertain of this artist's identity. The image,... Click for details

Very nice watercolor showing a blazing orange sky over a tranquil harbor. I believe this to be c1950 (not examined out of frame). Housed in a limed oak frame, total size is 11 1/2 x 13 1/2", watercolor alone 7 1/2 x 9 1/2". Nice use of dark colors to show the shadowed boats in harbor.

Four hidden faces in this rarely seen outside of museums, original Watercolor and Ink Painting on paper, by "Eliza R. Stone," also known as Elizabeth Stone; dated "1892."
