This engraved print is entitled LES THERMES DE DIOCLETIEN A ROME (at top), VUE PERSPECTIVE … RESTAURATION (at bottom). It depicts the Baths of Diocletian (Thermae Diocletiani) which were the grandest of the Roman public baths. Lower right reads A. GUILLAUMOT PERE SC. Below "VUE…" it reads "Imp. Ch. Chardon" indicating the engraver, Charles Chardon who worked in the late 19th century in Paris. Below "RESTAURATION…" it reads Firmin-Didot & Cie. Editeurs. At the lower left it reads E. PAULIN DEL. Beautifully finished aquatints of rustic scenes ca 1800 published by Ackermann's Repository, a source for fine prints in London in the early 1800's. These have a painterly quality and the rich color associated with the best examples of hand-finished aquatints, a short-lived and expensive method for reproducing paintings in the Regency period.
