This extremely well done Art Deco bronze figure was likely done anywhere between the 1910s and the 1920s. The nude appears to be a mythological figure who is so fluid and graceful looking that she should have graced the hood of an automobile. Dimensions are 10-5/8 inches tall overall including the 3-5/8 inch round base; the bronze itself is 9 inches in height. There are letters stamped on her arm, but they are not familiar. PROFESSOR OTTO POERTZEL (1876-1963), one of the greatest Art Deco sculptors in Germany, was born in Scheibe in 1876. The son of a porcelain designer, he studied under Professor R. Moller at the Porcelain Industrial Technical School and set up in Coburg as a sculptor during the 1920s-30s. A carved clay Indian Hindu figure in the shape of a mermaid, with the underside deeply incised with the image of an eagle over a shield with the date 1877. The mermaid is suspended from a newer chain and holds both of her hands aloft to hold the sign or a light. This chryselephantine silvered bronze figurine by the Austrian sculptor, Josef Lorenzl (1892-1950), features polychrome floral painted decoration attributed to Crejo. Cast signature "Lorenzl". Figurine is mounted on its original green onyx stone pedestal. Entire piece (including pedestal) measures 12.75" by 4" by 2.75" and weighs 2 lbs. Dates from the height of the Art Deco period.
