A real woodcarving tour de force is this Art Nouveau fantasy vase, depicting a snail shell held up by ferns, the sort of thing found in majolica and silver quite often in the latter Nineteenth Century. Were it carved of a plain piece of wood it would still be a triumph, but it was formed from an elaborately pieced together parquetry of several different and contrasting woods: boxwood, ebony, etc. British or Continental, with a few chips out here and there. This beautiful Italian statue is carved from wood. The statue has a very distinctive aged ivory color. The wood grain shows through in some places here and there. There is original gold leaf that remains in both the hair and in the wrap around the child's body.
There is also some red pigment on the lips and brown and gold in the eyes.

Original bronze sculpture depicting a nude female figure by Benjamin D. Kopman (Russian-born American painter and sculptor, 1887-1965), offered in excellent condition. This rare work measures 8 1/2" including its marble base. It is signed "Kopman" and is numbered 3/8. Kopman's sculptures are a rather rare find. He is well-listed, exhibited, and collected.
