A carved clay Indian Hindu figure in the shape of a mermaid, with the underside deeply incised with the image of an eagle over a shield with the date 1877. The mermaid is suspended from a newer chain and holds both of her hands aloft to hold the sign or a light. She is coated with a heavy layer of brown weathered outdoor paint, and measuring approx. 28"L x 7-1/2"W x 15"H.

Offered for sale is a large terracotta head. Painted gold and thick walled, this piece could go under the term "Degenerate Art" taken from Germany or what is now the Czech Republic before WW II. (Why would they bother to carry this with them?) The patriarch of the family was an artist. The work is unsigned. It measures 15" high x 10" wide x 13" deep. It is in fine original condition. Great craftsmanship and detail.

Modelled in Tribhanga posture on a rectangular base, his lowered right hand holding lotus flower and the raised left with lotus stem, wearing dhoti, bejewelled, his face with serene expression, elongated earlobes, jatamakuta with strands falling over his shoulders and set with diminutive figure of Amitabha and large halo behind.
