Here's an extremely well Carved Rooster circa 1900 of what I think is cedar or redwood (still mildly aromatic) attached to metal legs and feet standing on a wooden ball mounted to a pine block.Excellent form and well executed deep carving. Condition- the tail has been broken off and glued back in two places. It also looks like the very tip of the beak has been broken off at some time also. “Hark, the herald angels sing!” I have always imagined that this German High Renaissance figure of an archangel originally must have held a music book in his missing hands. Even in its deteriorated state, there is a magnificence to the statue’s graceful, liquid form, and fortunately, there is no damage to the carving of the handsome, beatific face. Traces of the original gesso and gilding remain and the piece has been stabilized by the addition of a heavy old marble base. It is in healthy co... Click for details

A real woodcarving tour de force is this Art Nouveau fantasy vase, depicting a snail shell held up by ferns, the sort of thing found in majolica and silver quite often in the latter Nineteenth Century. Were it carved of a plain piece of wood it would still be a triumph, but it was formed from an elaborately pieced together parquetry of several different and contrasting woods: boxwood, ebony, etc. British or Continental, with a few chips out here and there. Approximately six inches high and ... Click for details

This beautiful Italian statue is carved from wood. The statue has a very distinctive aged ivory color. The wood grain shows through in some places here and there. There is original gold leaf that remains in both the hair and in the wrap around the child's body.
There is also some red pigment on the lips and brown and gold in the eyes.
As with many such statues, there is some slight damage in a few areas. Both hands have been damaged long ago and are shown in detail in the pictures. The right... Click for details

This 9.75" t. x 11.5" x 10.75" hand-carved wooden sculpture of a cow and her calf is a fine example of Haitian art. The entire piece seems to have been carved from a single block of wood and then polished by hand, where the artist desired to do so. The mother is tethered to a stump, and you can see the rope trail off behind her. The ground is nicked and textured, and also has some greenish patination. As the calf is nursing, the mother is licking her on her rump. ... Click for details
