This beautiful Magpie ,by Hayes Leekya, is carved of jet and inlaid with mother of pearl shell on the wings. Two blue turquoise stones are added as eyes. This bird deals with omens and prophecies; the mysteries of life and death. Jet is a form of lignite coal found in several areas of the Southwest.
Hayes Leekya is a well-known Zuni carver -- the Leekya name is legendary for Zuni carving and jewelry, but I don't know where he falls on the extended family tree.
Dimensions: Fetish is 3 5/8 in... Click for details

Well know Zuni carver, Freddie Leekya, carved this incredible Maiden with an Olla on top of her head. This is the traditional way of carrying water. Her dress is inlayed with turquoise, coral and jet and the Olla is filled with turquoise stones.
Travertine is also called "Zuni stone" because it is the stone of Zuni Pueblo. If you ever get the chance to visit the Pueblo, you will see that many of the buildings of the region and Zuni pueblo itself are made of this rock. It's therefore very mean... Click for details

Here is a set of beautiful 24 Zuni Bear Fetishes. I had an old necklace, but it fell apart and so I am selling them for somebody that would like to string them back into a necklace or would use them for some other craftwork. The large bear is made from deep red Arizona pipestone and the small bear fetishes are dolomite.
See the image with the copper penny of the large bear and some of the smaller bears to size them. All the fetishes have a hole drilled from the top to the bottom.

Another from the collection I acquired where my friend bought only the best, but now must part with them. A very nicely done badger -- the color variation in the stone, with the artist leaving the dark part of the stone for the face, makes for quite the dramatic critter, especially with the turquoise eyes. Badgers are believed to be good for bringing strength and power to their "owners," so if you know someone facing a challenge or obstacle, or even a recent graduate (either a college grad headi... This is quite a sizable piece of high-quality pipestone, that sought-after deep brick red color, and represents a badger. I have a few other pipestone fetishes for sale -- as of this listing, I don't know how many remain because two sold immediately. Pipestone is very special to Native American culture and I believe now primarily reserved for Native American use only. It's found in Arizona and Minnesota.
This badger has a particularly well-done face, with deep inset black eyes. The way this ... Click for details

The white marble is an advantage here, making Hayes Leekya's signature on the horse's belly more noticeable and legible. An August, 2004 article in New Mexico Magazine's annual "Native American" issue, featured Hayes making horses with inlaid turquoise hooves, very similar to this one, and he comments that of all the animals he carves, "Horses are my favorites." He also says it takes him about four hours to carve a horse.
The article also mentions that before gathering stone for carving -- ... Click for details
