The Zapotecs are descendants of the Maya Indians, who were weaving with native cotton and fibers when Cortez arrived with sheep. They are famous for their pretty and functional wool textiles. This Storm Pattern Navajo Indian rug won the First Place at the Museum of Northern Arizona in 1978. Woven by Navajo Indian Helen Smith of Cedar Ridge, she has updated the old style design of the Storm Pattern with tiny squares of colors.
