PRAYING MANTIS - This dramatically elegant wood obi-hasami type netsuke depicts a finely detailed praying Mantis with large bulging eyes. This type of netsuke is designed to be thrust behind the obi with the forelegs hooked over the top of the obi. The back of the Mantis is bamboo like in the nodal segmentation of the body. He seems to be suspended in mid-flight about to pounce on its victim with his powerful forelegs. The cord opening is formed by the “praying” position of the forelegs. It is ... Click for details

DRAGON This outstanding wood netsuke depicts an elegant, sinuous Dragon with a fierce expression and an S-shaped neck, seemingly crawling forward. The undulating spine suggests that it has a secondary function as a brush rest for a scholar‘s table. The opening, formed by the leg and the position of the second spinal hump, offer the interesting suggestion that this netsuke was designed to lay along the top of the obi in a crawling posture. It is 5-½ inches long. A prominent netsuke collector is... Click for details

SKELETON HOLDING A GRAVE POST This rare and unusual wood netsuke dramatically depicts a skillfully carved tall skeleton with his arms grasping a grave post. The face has an agonized expression suggesting that the skeleton is clinging to the grave post in a desperate attempt to not leave this world and go to the “other world”. The 18th century type cord openings are centered on the back of the grave post with the larger opening for the knot in the lower position. It is 4-¾ inches long. A promin... Click for details

“MYTHICAL BEAST” This superb netsuke in wood, of a tall standing mythical beast, possibly had it’s inspiration from a drawing in the Sokenkisho, published in 1781, in which the biographies of 57 netsuke artists were recorded along with sketches of various netsuke subjects including one very similar to this netsuke. This “Beast’ stands on long, knee-less legs, with an S-shaped neck and sinuous tail. The finely detailed head, which contrasts dramatically with the smooth surface of the legs and bo... DARUMA “GHOST” This very fine netsuke is a unique conception, in wood, of Daruma posing as a ghost standing, with mouth open and a grimacing expression on his face. He holds his fly-whisk in his right hand letting the thick hair hang loosely down over his head partially obscuring the right side of his face. He hangs his left hand limply in front of his chest in a ghostly female fashion. His eyes are inlaid and the dark stain on his face and chest heighten his ghostly appearance and contrast n...
