PRAYING MANTIS - This dramatically elegant wood obi-hasami type netsuke depicts a finely detailed praying Mantis with large bulging eyes. This type of netsuke is designed to be thrust behind the obi with the forelegs hooked over the top of the obi. The back of the Mantis is bamboo like in the nodal segmentation of the body. DRAGON This outstanding wood netsuke depicts an elegant, sinuous Dragon with a fierce expression and an S-shaped neck, seemingly crawling forward. The undulating spine suggests that it has a secondary function as a brush rest for a scholar‘s table.
