Yoshiga Daibi probably should have been designated a living national treasure for his contribution to Hagi pottery. This chawan shows why. Beautiful glaze and form, large size, well balanced and well fired. I visited his museum in Hagi a few years ago, and this piece is as good as any of the chawan there! I have priced this peice at about wholesale, I bought it right, so I pass along the savings, it would probably retail for $3000 or more. Perfect condtion, signed box, 5 3/4" wide by 3" tal... This irabo style was said to be preferred by the samurai for its simple and irritating ( ira-ira ) form. Hatakeyama Zekan's work has been widely published in Japan. In the Chatoh book his chawan are priced between 400 and 600 thousand yen. Here is the rub, it does not "ring" well, this may be normal for his work, or there may be a hairline. I have searched this piece under 10x magnification and have not found any defects, but it is sold final as is. 5 3/4" diameter by 3 1/2" tall signed box... Click for details
