About two years ago, we obtained a previously overlooked hoard of tobacco and smoking items. Descended in the family of an employee of the Scotten Dillon Co. of Detroit, the items have now been revealed to be unissued Civil War production. The Scotten Dillon Company was founded in 1856 and flourished when the Civil War created a demand for packaged tobacco and inexpensive smoking accessories. They produced smoking and chewing tobacco under several brand names as well as producing and packaging t... Click for details

Very rare powderhorn for a flint lock musket carved from buffalo horn. This piece is circa 80 to 100 years old from one of the hill tribes of Guizhou in Southern China. As the Miao are the largest of the many ethnic groups in Guizhou, I am giving it this assignation but it might be Dong or Yao as well. The structure on this piece is exactly the same as the previous listing but the pattern is more vigorous also probably not as old. The geometrical design reminds me of the Yao textiles, b... This 12 5/8” long, 8 ˝ pound cast bronze canon (TEH119) was purchased in Morelia, Mexico in 1960 by the late Chester Howard, adventurer, collector, and founder of the Colorado Mineral Society in 1936. Believed to date back into the early 19th century colonial period, the canon has no markings and except for its bent ball handle, is in excellent condition. Obviously too small to have been effective as a fearsome weapon, it was most likely used to issue a salute or a warning. The canon would make ... Click for details
