This is a antique dagger dating to about 1600. It is a “left hand dagger” which was used in conjunction with a rapier in the right hand. It was used to catch the other fighter’s blade to allow a thrust, or to stab when the rapier was disadvantaged. They were made with the rapiers and sold together, though many more rapiers survive, than daggers. That is because daggers of all types were often relegated to use as knives when their use as weapons was outmoded. Thus, they were sharpened until ... Click for details

This is the small dagger called a kozuka which is kept in the scabbard along with the samurai long and shorts swords. It had a beautifully fashioned handle which matched the sword mounts, from which it is removable for use without the handle. This is the removed blade. Years ago, we found a collection of these from a “fitting” collector who removed the blades and displayed the handles alone in kiri wood boxes. That was often done and because the blades are plain far fewer than handles have survi... Click for details

One very interesting period in history is the Mahdist War of 1885 when the English fought the followers of the "Mad Mahdi" in the Sudan. They were known as the whirling Dervish because they would dance in a trance with their billowing robes fanning out in a circle. Their weapons were very distinctive. The spears were of a particularly vicious form with barbs in a variety of configurations. This is a good example, 55" long on its original haft. The has a pair of opposing barbs which could be used... Click for details
