9th century. Finely forged of broad veined hollow triangular section with flat sharpened edge point with cusped base veins. Tang bent. Just under 2 3/4” overall. Eastern Finnish and showing distinct Turco-Mongol influence. Finland was tribal at the time and mixed with Eastern and Southeastern peoples. See Nicolle fig. 173i and discussion on p.89.

One piece cylindrical ivory grip with concentric circle decoration the top, bottom and butt. Exposed tang secured with double pins. Iron bolster with delicately fretted support to the 6 3/4” leaf shaped s.e. blade. Each side with a narrow grove flanked by incised lines, the left with punched decoration or arsenal marks. Blade quite bright with some tool finish. Grip shows good honey patina with graining and some red staining. Heavy construction for greater striking capability.
