Stepped cane haft matching above examples in character. Transitional form gilt bronze socket of tapered form with thickened medial and ends. Finely forged head of rounded profile with broad fullers flanking the medial and incised chevrons over stacked banded base. Head excellent. Small chip to the socket base flare. Haft with fine character and original Bandholtz collection inventory tag attached. 77” length.

Probably earlier and showing greater age with some wear and surface encrustation to the haft. Socket secured with a single rattan band. Exceptional quality head with rounded raised medial developing to flat plains forming the edges rather than the usual diamond section. Head shows fine crisp patterning with lovely veined gray edges flanking the lighter core. 71” length.

Iron head showing fine active pattern, and transverse tooled texture. Similar profile but made without the expanded base and transitioned directly into the rectangular section tang. Rattan socket with three transverse bands securing basket weave wrap. The only example in the collection with that variation. The Moro warrior usually went into battle with two spears. The first was thrown at the onset and the second was used to thrust and parry, much like the Zulu tactic. Due to their lighter construction and as they were thrown, surviving throwing spears are very rare. This example, at 79” overall, is a much lightened version of the heavy spear. `Extremely heavy with large iron head of characteristic form with ringed expanded base and distinct contrasting patterned blade. Heavy stepped cane haft. Large rattan socket with thickened segments near the terminals. 83 1/2” length. Condition matching #108 with dark mottled patina from use and wear to the haft and socket. Head smooth and bright with graining as forged.

89 3/4” overall with pattern welded steel head of traditional form on stepped cane haft. Finely wrapped rattan socket with thick upper segment and cylindrical segment below. Head excellent with some grain opening as forged. Distinct central chevron contrasting with hardened edge pattern showing. Haft and wrap show considerable age at the time of collection (before 1904). Excellent preservation and fine age character. Original Bandholtz collection inventory tag attached.
