Napoleonic period. Brass hilt of identical styling to the above examples, varying in detail from the maker as do all these. Hilt excellent with good patina and few minor bruises. 26 1/2” curved s.e. blade crisply etched with foliage and military trophies both sides and maker’s name, D. Girtanner in St Gallen on the right side. Blade shows smooth dark patina with a little scattered old black oxidation. Decoration crisp. Switzerland fought the French and were finally defeated in 1798.

Pattern identical to the above. 23 1/8” blade retains virtually 100% original bright polish-the finest of its kind for condition that we have seen. C.1799 with blade bearing on both sides, the crowned cipher of Maximilian Joseph, King of Bavaria who succeeded Charles Theodore in 1799. Identical pattern with 28 5/8” blade. Hilt of heavier proportions and a little more copper rich alloy in excellent condition. Blade dark and mostly smooth original finish with interspersed pitting marks and small islands blending to good uniform aged character. Companion to the above in the rearming of Bavaria for the Napoleonic Wars.

Brass hilt of briquet form. 22 3/4” curved s.e. blade on unusual section, unedged for the first third and tapering through its length to slender configuration. Long false edge.
