This is a fine example of the type of a sword favored by American officers of the French & Indian War and American Revolution. Its brass hilt was probably silver plated originally. That allowed the appearance of a silver hilted sword when the silver industry was evolving and genuine examples were scarce and expensive. Another example from this group is shown in Swords and Blades of the American Revolution, #215.S.

The evolution of the rapier in the second half of the 16th century responded to sophisticated fighting techniques developed in Italy and embraced by the rest of Europe. The swept hilt rapier was accompanied by a dagger for the left hand which could parry an attack as well as deliver a fatal thrust if the opportunity arose. This example epitomizes that weapon in its early evolutionary form. Of particular interest are the deep fullers of the blade, each with a series of piercings which, in addi... Click for details

This sword can be accurately dated, by the form of its hilt, to the period of the Scottish Rebellion which was followed closely by the French and Indian Wars, in which many exiled Scots fought. Its large proportions indicate a fighting sword and it certainly would have been as at home in Colonial America as elsewhere. It comes from one of the most esteemed collections in England, notable for its Scottish content.

Out of the depression of 1873 which fostered the organization of labor resulting in federal troops being pitted against strikers, came a nationwide surge in the concept of brotherhood and fraternity-unification of the common man into bands to provide for the security of the individual through the strength of the group. The greatest advocate of that concept, Joseph Cullen Root founded the Modern Woodsman of America in 1883 which swept the nation popularized, in part, by drill teams of members who...
