Classic example for the Gioco Del Ponte, the Pisan bridge tournament first fought in 1568. 7” width of characteristic form with eleven circular bars secured to scalloped medial top plate and bottom band with two securing lugs. Once heavily rusted (these were kept in the city arsenal of Pisa) now surface cleaned with encrustation to the inside and protected areas-all dating to antiquity. Any genuine armor pieces are now quite rare and this is an important single element.

13” overall with rolled and roped borders, delicately fluted upper edge. Hand engraved in large stylized foliage and gilt overall. Crisp with about 50% heavy gold overlay remaining. Fully gilt fighting armor is extremely rare and this element surely comes from an important armor destroyed during WWII.

Finely formed with thick roped turning knuckle base, pivoted securing hook and triple holes for the hinge. The base etched with a broad band of interlocking cabled figures on goldschmeltz ground. The upper edge corrugated for strength with double band of interrupted hound’s tooth decoration. Original liner leathers intact. Excellent throughout. The complete helmet from which this has become detached would be valued in the $60,000 range if such an example was in private hands.

It was likely produced for service in the 30 Years War then served again in the English Civil War as a great many did. It has been in England for as long as can be determined. The surface is a uniform brown color as is produced from faded blue suggesting that it was blued overall originally. The material is rolled steel and skull bears the original hammer marks on the exterior, necessary to produ... Click for details
