Purchased in the 1960’s and early 70’s at relic shacks in the Gettysburg Battlefield area. Many soldiers removed rings before battle to avoid snagging and many fell from pockets during the battle.
Brass, probably plated originally, with high raised hand engraved border bezel mounting a natural carnelian. The body evidently silver alloy or “base silver” with a little wear and good patina. Size 10.

Civil war soldier’s silver ring. Evidently originally a plain band, now carved into a chain effect comprising ten abutting ovals. That feat probably accomplished with a pocket knife and many idle hours. Quaintly executed testifying to the amateur status of its maker. Size 9 1/2. Charming.... Click for details

Probably saw service right through the English Civil War. Of great weight, the deep domed skull in two pieces with riveted seam. Rolled edge brim with slot pierced through for the spring tensioned heavy sliding nasal bar, with expanded terminal and lower terminal with rivet stop. Coarse cloth covered overall with a fine mail matrix incorporating lacquered plates, three on the forearm, raised edge upper plate (edge cracked), vertically ribbed plates, a single gourd shepae dplate and rectangular above, each with separately applied flower decoration.three piece hand protection with matching applied flower.
