A terrific portrait match safe or vesta case in the form of a miniature book. The cover with a relief portrait of Queen Victoria (1819-1901) and the motto "In Memoriam", the reverse with her regal monogram in fancy script set amongst the complex floral decoration. The case is made from Vulcanite, also known as Gutta Percha, a very hard rubber and the Victorian precursor to bakelite and plastics. The spine has traces of infill with some sparkle left to it, it was done in imitation of a gilt bind... Click for details

This lovely little metal box has a button on the side that unlatches the lid and flips the top open. It was to keep matches safe and dry in a gentleman's pocket, but one could put all sorts of other small items in it, from pills/vitamins to dimes for parking meters to paper clips -- be imaginative! And the container itself is lovely.
Great condition, no dents or chips in the metal, and the lid fits snugly. I believe the unique line markings on the bottom are for striking the matches across and... Click for details

Interesting Vesta Case match safe made from what was once called gutta percha, but now called vulcanite. The case is carved with channels creating raised lines. The top flips up, and there is a striker section along the side, as well as a decorative area on the front with the name 'Sachseln' marked in the center. The case was probably a Victorian souvenir from a spa in the Swiss city of Sachseln. A very unusual piece. ... Click for details
